Afrobeat star Seun Kuti has called out Nigerian celebrities and feminists for their silence amid Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment allegations.

The senator, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, recently opened up about facing sexual harassment within the Senate, a revelation that has sparked heated discussions. However, Seun Kuti believes the issue is not receiving the attention it deserves.

Taking to Instagram, the outspoken musician expressed disappointment over the lack of solidarity shown towards Akpoti-Uduaghan, especially from women’s rights activists and celebrities who are usually vocal on social issues.

Kuti compared the silence surrounding the senator’s case to the overwhelming public support Annie Idibia received during her divorce saga with singer 2Face Idibia. He criticized the inconsistency in how Nigerian women and celebrities choose their battles.

“When it was Annie Idibia, everybody was shouting. Now a senator is speaking out against sexual harassment, and you are all quiet. It’s appalling,” Kuti wrote.

He also slammed the Nigerian entertainment industry, accusing some Nollywood actors and actresses of benefiting from fraudulent government grants, which prevents them from speaking up on sensitive issues like this.

Kuti further noted that while Nigerians are quick to discuss celebrity scandals like Burna Boy’s Lamborghini drama, they often ignore serious social issues affecting the country.

Despite stating that he cannot lead a protest for the senator, Kuti urged Nigerian women to rally behind Akpoti-Uduaghan and demand justice.

“I stand with Senator Natasha 100 percent… Nigerian women should rise and support her. This kind of thing cannot continue in this country.”

The controversy continues to spark debates on gender-based violence, celebrity hypocrisy, and the lack of solidarity for women in power.
