BBC News Africa has bagged a top honor at the 2025 Royal Television Society (RTS) Awards for Digital Journalism, with their documentary “Disciples: The Cult of TB Joshua” winning in the Best Digital Journalism category.
The three-part documentary, released in 2024, delves into the life and controversial legacy of the late Nigerian televangelist TB Joshua, exposing allegations of manipulation, abuse, and exploitation within his Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN).
The documentary sparked heated conversations globally, shedding light on the dark side of one of Nigeria’s most famous religious figures.
The RTS jury praised the documentary’s exceptional storytelling and innovative approach, especially for engaging news-averse audiences through custom-made TikTok videos — a first of its kind for the BBC.
TB Joshua, who passed away in 2021, was widely known for his televised miracles and large following. However, his ministry was tainted by accusations of fake miracles, sexual abuse, and financial exploitation — allegations his church has consistently denied.
This win further solidifies BBC News Africa’s reputation for groundbreaking investigative journalism across the continent.
Congratulations to the BBC team on this remarkable achievement!
