The 1984 ‘Supergirl’ Movie: A Misstep That Nearly Ended Female-Led Superhero Films

When Supergirl debuted in 1984, it was meant to breathe new life into the Superman franchise. Instead, it flopped spectacularly, becoming one of DC’s most infamous failures. Despite the promising casting of Helen Slater as Kara Zor-El, the film’s campy dialogue, weak plot, and lackluster villains doomed it, leaving a legacy of disappointment for female-driven superhero movies.

The movie’s biggest flaw was its inability to replicate the earnest tone of the first two Superman films, where Christopher Reeve’s Superman brought authenticity to the role. Instead of epic heroics, Supergirl found herself battling an over-the-top witch (played by Faye Dunaway) over a love interest that no one cared about. Slater’s compelling portrayal of Supergirl was left stranded in a script that failed to respect its source material.

Originally, Christopher Reeve’s Superman was intended to appear as a mentor figure, but his absence, reportedly due to dissatisfaction with the comedic approach, left the film feeling disconnected from the Superman franchise. This lack of continuity further alienated fans and contributed to its lackluster box office performance, earning less than $15 million against a $35 million budget.

The failure of Supergirl cast a long shadow over female superhero films, discouraging studios from pursuing similar projects for decades. It wasn’t until television series like Supergirl (2015–2021) and modern box office hits like Wonder Woman that female-led superhero stories began to reclaim their footing.

However, the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, part of James Gunn’s DC Universe reboot, offers hope for a fresh start. Based on Tom King’s celebrated comic, the film aims to redeem the character’s cinematic legacy. With Milly Alcock stepping into the iconic role, Supergirl might finally get the respect it deserves.
