In a courtroom filled with emotion and heavy testimony, Utah mother and children’s book author Kouri Richins was sentenced on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, to spend the rest of her life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentence brings a definitive close to a case that captivated the nation, involving a lethal “Moscow Mule” cocktail and a children’s book about grief written after the crime.

Third District Court Judge Richard Mrazik delivered the final ruling, stating that Richins, 36, is “simply too dangerous to ever be free.” The Kouri Richins sentencing life in prison 2026 decision follows her conviction in March on multiple felony counts, including:

• Aggravated Murder: Life without parole.

• Attempted Aggravated Murder: 5 years to life.

• Insurance Fraud & Forgery: Consecutive terms totaling up to 35 years.

The judge highlighted the “calculated nature” of the crime, noting that after failing to poison her husband, Eric Richins, on Valentine’s Day 2022, she “doubled down” and completed the act 17 days later for financial gain.

The most jarring moment of the hearing came when statements from Richins’ three sons now ages 13, 11, and 9 were read in court. The children expressed deep fear of their mother, with counselors stating the boys would feel “unsafe” if she were ever released.

One son’s letter accused her of locking him in his room daily while she drank, while another mentioned the trauma of losing his father on what would have been his 44th birthday—the very day the sentencing took place. Her sister-in-law, Katie Richins-Benson, who now cares for the boys, told the court, “My nephews are not props for some twisted children’s book.”

Throughout the 30 minutes she spoke, Richins maintained her innocence, calling the guilty verdict “an absolute lie.” Clad in a lime-green jail uniform, she addressed her children directly, saying, “I know today you hate me… but I am coming home.”

Her defense team, which called no witnesses during the original trial, has already announced plans to appeal both the conviction and the sentence. They have been granted a 28-day extension to file for a new trial.
