The wait is over. Beyoncé is officially returning to the Met Gala red carpet for the first time in a decade, and she is doing so in the most powerful way possible: as a co-chair. The 2026 edition of fashion’s biggest night, set for May 4 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, will see the global icon join Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour as co-chairs of the prestigious event.
Beyoncé’s returns as co-chair after decade-long absence marks a significant moment for the Met Gala 2026 Beyoncé headlines have dominated since the announcement. Her last appearance was at the 2016 “Manus x Machina” edition, where she stunned in a latex Givenchy gown. Now, ten years later, she steps into a leadership role for one of the most exclusive nights in fashion.
Organizers have revealed that this year’s dress code is “Fashion Is Art,” a theme designed to complement the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Costume Art” . Curator Andrew Bolton explained that the exhibition explores the “centrality of the dressed body” across 5,000 years of art history, featuring over 400 objects that pair historical garments with paintings and sculptures from the museum’s collection.
The dress code encourages attendees to treat the body as a blank canvas. Guests are expected to push boundaries with conceptual, theatrical looks that blur the line between wearable fashion and fine art.
Beyond the co-chairs, the evening will feature a host committee co-chaired by designer Anthony Vaccarello and actress Zoë Kravitz. The committee includes a formidable lineup of music and entertainment talent: Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, LISA, Sam Smith, and Teyana Taylor will all be in attendance, alongside sports stars like Venus Williams and A’ja Wilson and actors such as Gwendoline Christie and Elizabeth Debicki.
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos serve as honorary chairs and lead sponsors for the gala, which serves as the primary fundraiser for the Costume Institute.
This year’s gala also inaugurates a major physical transformation for the Costume Institute. The exhibition will open in the new Condé M. Nast Galleries, a 12,000-square-foot space located adjacent to the museum’s Great Hall. This marks a symbolic shift, placing fashion permanently at the center of the museum’s physical and curatorial identity.
The exhibition opens to the public on May 10 and runs through January 10, 2027.
