In 2013, Gareth Bale made headlines with his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid. While it was initially reported that the Welshman’s transfer fee was less than Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2009 transfer to Madrid, leaked documents have since revealed the true cost of the deal.
According to Football Leaks, Real Madrid paid a total of €99,743,542, equivalent to £85,131,147 at the 2013 exchange rate, for Bale—making him more expensive than Ronaldo’s reported £83 million transfer.
The payments were structured in four installments:
1. €24,935,895 within 10 days of the agreement.
2. €24,935,895 by July 24, 2014.
3. €24,935,895 by July 24, 2015.
4. €21,282,787 by July 24, 2016.
Adding to the deal’s intrigue, Bale was insured for a staggering £78 million, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez reportedly describing it as “a life insurance, against accidents.” Additionally, a clause in the agreement stipulated that Madrid would pay Tottenham £10 millionif they sold Bale back to a Premier League club before September 1, 2015.
Bale’s Impact at Real Madrid
During his nine-year stint at the Santiago Bernabéu, Bale was instrumental in Real Madrid’s success, delivering key performances in pivotal matches. He amassed:
• 258 appearances
• 106 goals
• 5 Champions League titles
• 3 La Liga titles
However, his time in Madrid was not without challenges. Bale faced injury setbacks and a gradual decline in playing time, leading to a loan move back to Spurs in 2020 before joining MLS side Los Angeles FC in 2022.
After representing Wales in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Bale announced his retirement from professional football in early 2023, leaving behind a legacy as one of football’s most impactful and high-profile players.
