Henry Cavill Almost Became James Bond: Why He Lost the Iconic Role to Daniel Craig

In 2006, Henry Cavill was on the brink of becoming the next James Bond in Casino Royale. The Man of Steel actor made it to the final stages of auditions, impressing everyone involved, including director Martin Campbell. However, the decision ultimately favored Daniel Craig, marking the start of an unforgettable era for 007.

According to insiders, Cavill’s audition was so compelling that even Daniel Craig himself acknowledged the young actor’s talent. Still, the franchise’s producer, Barbara Broccoli, was swayed by Craig’s performance in Layer Cake, cementing his casting. Interestingly, Campbell reportedly leaned toward Cavill, but Broccoli’s vision for Bond gave Craig the edge.

Despite the loss, Cavill’s audition wasn’t in vain. It caught the attention of filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, who later cast him in 2007’s Stardust. In hindsight, this “almost Bond” moment set Cavill on a path that would eventually make him a global star as Superman and a fan favorite in The Witcher.

Cavill, now 40, has expressed admiration for Craig’s portrayal, praising his ability to bring fresh energy to the legendary spy. While he’s yet to step into Bond’s tuxedo, Cavill remains a popular choice among fans and oddsmakers for the franchise’s next reboot. Whether or not he finally gets his shot, Cavill’s career has proven that near-misses in Hollywood often lead to even greater opportunities.

Who knows? The name’s Cavill. Henry Cavill. It still has a ring to it.
