Bill Gates has opened up about his 2020 divorce from Melinda Gates, calling it the “mistake” he regrets most in his life. In an interview with The Times of London, the 69-year-old Microsoft co-founder reflected on the challenges of ending their 27-year marriage, describing the experience as “miserable” for both parties.
Gates shared that the difficult period stretched over two years, but he and Melinda have since managed to maintain a friendly relationship. The former couple continues to co-parent their three children—Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22—and also enjoy shared family moments, including time with their two grandchildren.
Reflecting on their marriage, Gates credited Melinda for helping him stay “grounded” during Microsoft’s early years, as the company grew into a global tech giant. The pair married in 1994 and announced their separation in May 2021, with their divorce finalized later that year.
When asked about regrets, Gates acknowledged that while he has made mistakes throughout his life, the divorce remains the one he wishes he could undo. “I’m not sure I’d want to go back and change anything, but the divorce thing was a mistake,” he admitted.
Both Gates and Melinda have moved on romantically, but they remain committed to their family and their shared philanthropic efforts through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Gates expressed gratitude for the years they spent together, emphasizing the importance of their family bond despite the end of their marriage. “Melinda and I still see each other. We have three kids and two grandchildren, so there are family events,” he said.
While their marriage may have ended, their partnership in philanthropy and dedication to their family endures.
