Debbie Nelson, mother of iconic rapper Eminem, has passed away at the age of 69 after battling advanced lung cancer. Nelson reportedly died on Monday night in St. Joseph, Missouri, just months after being diagnosed in September.
Eminem, known for candidly airing his grievances through music, had a turbulent relationship with his mother. Tracks like “Cleaning Out My Closet” detailed accusations of neglect and abuse, which sparked public controversy. In 1999, Nelson even sued her son, further straining their relationship.
Despite their rocky history, the two attempted reconciliation over the years. Eminem’s 2013 song “Headlights” marked a heartfelt apology and acknowledgment of regret for past words. Nelson, in turn, sent her son a congratulatory message when he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, a sign of their mended bond.
Nelson also authored a 2007 memoir, “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem,” offering her perspective on their complex relationship.
Fans have expressed condolences to Eminem, who has not yet commented publicly on the loss.
