King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the world’s youngest reigning monarch who ascended the throne of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom at just three years old, has died at the age of 34. His death was announced on Friday by Tooro’s Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who called it an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family and the people of the kingdom.
The king died at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday. Tooro officials have not revealed the cause of his death, though media reports indicated he had been critically ill and was receiving treatment in the United States.
Born on April 16, 1992, Oyo became king on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. Guinness World Records recognized him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. His kingdom, which has more than 2 million people, is one of several traditional kingdoms in Uganda that wield significant cultural influence despite holding no political power.
A regency council governed the kingdom until Oyo reached adulthood, at which point his official coronation was held in 2010. The young king was well respected by his people and promoted causes such as youth empowerment, education, and climate conservation, as well as HIV/AIDS awareness. Oyo was not officially married and had no publicly recognized wife during his life.
His successor is expected to be a prince, whose identity will be announced in accordance with the kingdom’s traditional succession customs. The Prime Minister assured that “the continuity of the Crown is assured”.
