One of television’s most influential forces has gone quiet. James Burrows, the legendary sitcom director and co-creator of Cheers, died on Friday at the age of 85. His family confirmed he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after a brief illness.

For more than five decades, Burrows shaped how generations of audiences experienced comedy. He was the invisible hand behind the biggest laughs, directing over 1,000 episodes of television and bringing life to iconic shows like FriendsWill & GraceTaxi, and The Big Bang Theory. His 11 Emmy Awards and 48 nominations only hint at the scale of his impact on the industry.

Burrows was born into show business; his father, Abe Burrows, co-wrote the legendary Broadway musical Guys and Dolls. He began his television career in 1974, directing episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. But his true legacy was cemented alongside the Charles brothers, Glen and Les, when they created Cheers. It became a ratings giant and cultural touchstone, winning six of Burrows’ Emmys.

Burrows is credited with helming the pilots of some of television’s most legendary sitcoms, setting the tone for their success. His work on the pilot of Friends was so crucial he famously chartered a plane to take the cast to Las Vegas, allowing them to bond before the show made them global superstars. He later directed every single episode of the original run of Will & Grace, a show praised for its groundbreaking portrayal of gay characters. His impact was so profound that his agent, Rick Rosen, called him “the greatest comedic television director in the history of the medium”.

He was known for his generosity as a mentor, once saying his only mission was to “get the joke right”. Actor Eric McCormack summed up the sentiment, calling Burrows “the 800 lb gorilla of television comedy” who “has left not a mark but a footprint”. While the laughs on set have faded, the legacy of joy Burrows created for audiences worldwide will echo for generations.
