Jennifer Affleck is drawing a line. As The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives grapples with the fallout from a castmate’s domestic violence allegations, the 26-year-old reality star is speaking out about what she hoped the show would be and what it became.
In an emotional Instagram post shared March 22, Affleck wrote that when she joined the Hulu series, she didn’t know what would come from it. But she knew she wanted to share her story. “I hoped it could inspire someone or feel relatable,” she wrote. “I wanted to be honest about what it’s like being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the beauty and the struggles.”
She said she wanted to “highlight marriage, being married at a very young age, the real pressures many couples face with culture and expectations”, a reference to her 2019 wedding to husband Zac Affleck, a distant cousin of Ben Affleck.
Affleck’s message arrived as the show’s future hangs in the balance. Production on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives was paused earlier this month following an open domestic assault investigation involving castmate Taylor Frankie Paul and her ex Dakota Mortensen . The cast reportedly met virtually with Hulu and Disney executives on March 7 to discuss how to proceed. One cast member said on the call, “It’s a dangerous situation, it’s a sad situation, and we don’t know how to navigate it because Taylor is our friend”.
The situation escalated further when ABC pulled the entire upcoming season of The Bachelorette, which was set to star Paul, after cell phone footage surfaced showing her throwing chairs at Mortensen in a 2023 incident, with their eight-year-old daughter present.’
Affleck’s post wasn’t a comment on the allegations against her castmate. Instead, it was a reflection on the gap between her intentions and the final product.
“I understand drama is what people expect from reality TV, but I wish more of the other real moments were shown too,” she wrote. “The empowerment, the birth stories, the beauty of motherhood”.
She reflected on her time on Dancing with the Stars season 34, which she did postpartum: “My purpose was to represent moms to show our strength, our resilience, and what we’re capable of. To remind us that our dreams still matter, while honoring the incredible role it is to be a mother”.
The mother of three, daughters Nora, 4, and Penelope, 8 months, and son Luca, 2, ended her post with vulnerability. “My current TikTok search is literally ‘who is Jen Affleck’… and honestly, same. I’m still figuring out who I am, what I believe, what I want, and where I fit”.
Her husband Zac responded in the comments with three words: “I love you” .
With production on hold indefinitely, the fate of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives remains uncertain. Paul is still on probation until August 4 following a 2023 plea deal for aggravated assault, and a court hearing is scheduled for April 7 regarding custody of her two-year-old son.
For Affleck, the pause may offer something unexpected: a chance to realign the show with the vision she originally signed up for. Whether that happens remains to be seen. But one thing is clear, she’s done letting the drama define her story.
