Nick Cannon addressed two major topics that recently sent social media into a frenzy: his daughter Monroe’s viral comment about having “only one brother” and his controversial “double standard” parenting approach for his 15-year-old twins.
During an April 29 appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast with Shannon Sharpe, Cannon explained that the internet completely misunderstood what his eldest daughter actually meant.
In November 2025, Monroe Cannon wrote on her Instagram Story: “Clearing something up, guys, I only have ONE brother who is @moroccan.cannon. I do have other half-siblings from my dad, but they are all many many years younger than me!”. The post immediately sparked debate, with many believing Monroe was distancing herself from her 10 younger half-siblings.
Cannon revealed the real context. “It was really about 14-year-olds talking,” he said. According to the *Wild ‘N Out* host, teenagers online had been falsely claiming to be Monroe and Moroccan’s siblings. His daughter simply wanted to clarify that within her own age group and peer circle, Moroccan was her only sibling.
“It’s so funny because the world thought that it was about a conversation that was something it wasn’t,” Cannon told Sharpe.
Monroe was genuinely upset when her remarks went viral. Cannon described her as distressed over how her words were received. She even apologized to her father and her younger siblings over the fallout.
“The world jumped in on some teenage gossip conversation and tried to turn it into something else,” Cannon continued. “And then that upset my daughter. So she was like, ‘I didn’t mean that. I said my dad has other kids'”.
The moment became a teachable moment about social media’s dangers. Cannon imparted wisdom to his daughter: “Monroe, you don’t have to explain yourself to anybody. But let this be a lesson that you got to be very careful what you say on social media. People will take something very small and blow it up into something that you don’t have control over anymore”.
Just days later, Cannon stirred more conversation on the May 2 episode of the *TMZ Podcast* when he openly admitted to parenting his twins differently.
“My son been dating and I’ve allowed it. I’ve encouraged it,” Cannon said. When asked if Monroe received the same freedom, his response was blunt: “No, absolutely not.”
“It’s absolutely a double standard,” the 45-year-old admitted. “I know I get in trouble a lot ’cause I say things with my chest. But there is a difference when parenting a son and when parenting a daughter”.
Cannon explained he is “more protective” of Monroe because “there’s certain types of individuals that you want to keep your daughter away from”. His reasoning turned deeply personal and raw.
“If somebody puts their hands on my daughter, I’m going to jail,” Cannon claimed. “If some man puts his hands on my daughter, it’s my worst nightmare because I am going to jail forever”.
As for his son facing gold diggers? “He’s got a lot of money. His mama’s Mariah Carey,” Cannon quipped.
Despite the restrictions, Cannon hasn’t locked Monroe away forever. He’s preparing her for independence with a clear bargain.
“We made a deal. If she can explain to me what’s going to happen on these dates, then she can go,” he shared. “I’m preparing her for college. I know that’s out of my control. My daughter tells me any and everything.”
