Despite playing one of television’s most iconic characters, British actor Idris Elba has revealed that he’s never watched The Wire—and says he has no plans to ever tune in.
In a candid conversation on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, the 52-year-old actor opened up about his detachment from the hit HBO series that catapulted him into global stardom as the smooth yet ruthless drug kingpin Russell “Stringer” Bell.
“If I’m really honest, like, I didn’t watch The Wire,” Elba confessed. “And I feel bad. It’s not that I’m not a fan of it. I was there. I made a show that was so intense and so real, so important.”
Elba starred in The Wire from 2002 to 2004, during the show’s first three seasons, but said that his experience filming the gritty crime drama made it emotionally difficult to revisit.
“When Stringer Bell died, there was a part of me that died with that character,” he said. “It’s weird for me to go back and watch it.”
Amy asked if he’d consider watching it now, over 20 years later, but Elba quickly shut down the idea:
“No, man.”
He further explained that he generally doesn’t enjoy watching himself on screen, preferring to stay immersed in the craft rather than critiquing his performances.
“I don’t like being overly conscious of what my performance is like or whatever, because it makes me conscious about doing it,” he said. “I like being in it rather than watching it.”

Still Haunted by Stringer Bell
Elba’s portrayal of Stringer Bell remains one of his most acclaimed roles, and even now, the character continues to follow him in daily life.
“At least once a day, someone says, ‘Bro, Stringer Bell! The Wire!’” he laughed. “It surprises me how much impact that show had. In a good way, it surprises me continuously… multi-generationally, it’s still being talked about by people who weren’t even born then.”
While fans may be shocked that the actor behind Stringer Bell has never watched the series, Elba’s reflections offer a rare glimpse into the emotional toll of powerful performances—and why sometimes, actors prefer to leave the past in the rearview mirror.

The Wire is still considered one of the greatest television shows of all time. But for Idris Elba, the legacy lives on through the fans—not through replays.
