In a powerful moment that’s been almost ten years in the making, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has finally met and embraced Jelly Roll—the artist whose music helped him during one of the hardest periods of his life.
A Hug Years in the Making
The touching moment was shared by The Rock on Instagram, where he posted a heartfelt video of him and Jelly Roll hugging and expressing mutual love and admiration.
“A brotherly hug almost 10 years in the making…”
“Several years ago (roughly 2017) I was going through a very hard thing at the time. I was struggling.”
Dwayne revealed that during this low point in his life, Jelly Roll’s emotional track “Only” came on during a shuffle playlist—and it stopped him in his tracks.
How Jelly Roll’s Song Helped
The lyrics from “Only” deeply resonated with The Rock:
“What if the darkness inside of me has finally taken my soul?/What if the angels in heaven were sent to take me home?”
Moved by the raw honesty of the song, Dwayne said the music “rocked me. Hard core.” It compelled him to reach out to Jelly Roll back then, thanking him for helping him navigate a deeply emotional period:
“This song of yours is helping me through some stuff I’m dealing with,” he told him.
“Our bond was born.”
A Special Gift from One Nashville Brother to Another
When they finally met in person, The Rock brought along a symbolic gift for Jelly Roll—a postcard of the old Alamo Plaza motel in South Nashville, a spot loaded with personal history.
Dwayne explained:
“When I was 15, I was forced to leave Hawaii and move to Nashville after we were evicted. That didn’t work out, and I ended up living with a stranger in a small spot on Murfreesboro Road… That man, Downtown Bruno, is still one of my best friends.”
He gifted the postcard—signed and full of meaning—to Jelly, calling it something the world might overlook, but that he knew would “mean a lot” to his fellow Nashville native.
Jelly Roll’s Reaction
In the emotional video, Jelly Roll was visibly moved and acknowledged the history and significance of the gift:
“This is real old school Nashville history.”
A Message of Hope and Healing
The Rock closed his post with a reflection on life, healing, and the people who guide us through the storms:
“Every once in a while we all get sliced up by life, but it’s amazing to see what kind of blessings and people that God and the universe will put in our lives to help us heal through our pain.”
This deeply personal moment between Dwayne Johnson and Jelly Roll is a reminder of the unseen battles people fight—and how music, connection, and kindness can be lifelines in the darkest times.
