Building on the studio’s success with stellar sequels like Moana 2 (2024), anticipation for the next chapter of the Zootopia universe is at an all-time high. The animated buddy-cop comedy will continue to follow the dynamic partnership between Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) as they tackle a new case.
What to Expect from Zootopia 2’s Plot
Details about the plot remain scarce, but fans can expect a thrilling mission for the beloved duo. IMDb offers a brief synopsis: “Brave rabbit cop Judy Hopps and her friend, the fox Nick Wilde, team up again to crack a new case, the most perilous and intricate of their careers.” This suggests the sequel will test the bond between the characters, throwing them into complex situations.
Disney has teased that Zootopia 2 will delve into the reptile community, where Hopps and Wilde will go undercover to solve a new mystery. A hint toward this theme is visible in the movie title, with the large “2” stylized with a snake tail. The inclusion of reptiles expands the storyline, bringing in new characters and species into the mix.
Meet the Cast of Zootopia 2
While the full cast is still under wraps, several voice stars have been confirmed. Goodwin and Bateman will reprise their roles as Hopps and Wilde, respectively. Shakira will also return as Gazelle, the pop star, along with other familiar faces such as Benjamin Clawhauser, Mr. Big, and Flash the Sloth.
New characters will also join the cast. Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan will voice Gary, a snake who finds himself on Hopps and Wilde’s radar. Fortune Feimster will voice Nibbles, a beaver who resides in Marsh Market, where the duo will go undercover. The sequel is set to feature a wide array of animals, including birds, marine creatures, primates, and amphibians, adding depth to the world of Zootopia. Although rumors suggest Gary could be the villain, this has not been confirmed.
When Will Zootopia 2 Be Released?
Zootopia 2 is scheduled for release in the United States on November 26, 2025. This marks more than five years after the original film’s directors, Rich Moore and Byron Howard, first hinted at the possibility of a sequel in June 2016. Disney CEO Bob Iger officially confirmed the film’s development in February 2023, and the release date was announced in February 2024.
Instead of Moore, Howard will team up with Jared Bush to direct the sequel. Bush is also credited as the writer, with Yvett Merino serving as the producer. Although the release date could change, Disney has set the stage for what is expected to be another massive success, following the Zootopia prequel’s global box office triumph.
