Why The Sandman is Ending After Just Two Seasons on Netflix – Showrunner Explains

Fans of The Sandman were surprised when Netflix confirmed that the hit fantasy series would end after its upcoming second season. But according to showrunner Allan Heinberg, the decision was not sudden — it’s simply about staying true to the heart of the story: Dream.

“It Was Always a Three-Season Story”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Heinberg said he always envisioned The Sandman as a three-season arc, but the team made the call to wrap things up early after a deep dive into Neil Gaiman’s legendary comic book source material.

“We learned making season one that we were only going to focus on the stories where Dream was the protagonist,” Heinberg explained.

While Gaiman’s original comic series (1989–1996) has over 75 issues, it’s structured more like an anthology, with Dream—also known as Morpheus or the Sandman—sometimes appearing only briefly in long story arcs that center on other characters. That format didn’t quite translate to TV.

“We realised the audience needs a character they can follow and root for. And with The Sandman, interest dropped when Dream wasn’t the focus.”

Why A Game of You Was Cut

A major turning point was the team’s decision to skip adapting the A Game of You storyline, which centers on Barbie (introduced in season one) and barely features Dream at all.

“We spent two months trying to build a version of A Game of You where Dream could take center stage,” Heinberg said.

“In the end, Netflix came to us and said, ‘What if we skipped it and went straight from Season of Mists into Brief Lives?’”

That creative pivot allowed the show to flow more naturally while keeping Dream’s emotional arc intact. For instance, Dream’s affair with the witch Thessaly in the comics was replaced by a storyline involving Nada, the Queen he once condemned to Hell — deepening the emotional weight of his character.

The Plan: End Strong, Stay Focused

Heinberg originally designed season two to end with the death of Orpheus (Dream’s son), while the third season would cover the dramatic events of The Kindly Ones and its aftermath — essentially the series’ grand finale.

But with A Game of You out of the way, the writers were able to merge the major remaining arcs into one final season.

“So it was a very organic process of asking: If we’re just telling Dream’s story, what are those elements, and can we do it in 11 episodes?”

The answer was yes.

What to Expect From The Sandman Season 2

While details are under wraps, season two will tackle key arcs like Season of MistsBrief Lives, and The Kindly Ones — meaning fans will see Dream wrestle with personal failure, grief, and his own legacy in the cosmos.

Plus, there’s an additional Death episode planned after the main 11 episodes — promising one final, emotional sendoff for Morpheus’ most beloved sibling.

A Thoughtful Goodbye

For fans of Gaiman’s beloved universe, the decision to end The Sandman early might sting — but Heinberg insists it’s the best way to honor the original vision.

“We’re telling Dream’s story,” he concluded. “And now we have everything we need to end it the right way.”
