Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam was supposed to redefine the DCEU, but instead, it left Warner Bros. grappling with massive losses. But the real story lies behind the scenes. Johnson’s aggressive vision for the film involved vetoing Shazam’s cameo, an action that insiders claim undermined both films. He also pushed hard for a showdown with Henry Cavill’s Superman, bypassing studio executives to get Cavill’s brief cameo approved. While the idea sounded great, it didn’t deliver the unifying spark Johnson had hoped for, leaving the DCEU even more fragmented.
The film’s premiere in late 2022 saw a solid but unspectacular $67 million opening. However, it lacked the staying power of previous DCEU blockbusters, and the absence of key markets like China and Russia only added to its woes. Despite Warner Bros.’ strategy of shorter theatrical windows, home entertainment revenue wasn’t enough to offset the film’s steep costs.
