As the countdown begins for the blockbuster semi-final clash between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), South Africa’s head coach Desiree Ellis has fired a bold warning: “We know how to beat Nigeria.”
The highly anticipated fixture is scheduled for Tuesday, and Ellis — whose team are the reigning WAFCON champions — believes her side has both the experience and the tactical know-how to conquer their Nigerian rivals once again.
“We know what this match means. We know what it takes to beat Nigeria,” Ellis confidently told CAFonline.
A Rivalry Renewed
This semi-final encounter is a continuation of one of Africa’s fiercest women’s football rivalries. While Nigeria boasts the superior head-to-head record, South Africa have shown they are no pushovers — especially in recent years.
In their last WAFCON meeting in 2022 (Morocco), Banyana Banyana edged the Super Falcons 1-0, a result that propelled them toward their maiden WAFCON title.
Road to the Semi-Final
South Africa earned their semi-final ticket after a tense quarter-final clash with Senegal, which they won 4-1 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time.
Nigeria, on the other hand, looked absolutely ruthless in their own quarter-final matchup, thrashing Zambia 5-0 to make a strong statement of intent.
Ellis Banking on Strategy and Experience
Coach Ellis, known for her tactical discipline and emphasis on team cohesion, is expected to field a highly organized and physical side. With stars like Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane leading the charge, South Africa will hope to frustrate Nigeria’s attacking flair.
