South African global sensation Tyla is heading to infinity and beyond. The Grammy-winning artist has officially joined Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5, voicing a brand-new character called Inflatable Flamingo in the Sub-Saharan African version of the film. The announcement marks her debut as a Disney voice actress.

The Water hitmaker becomes the first African artist to bring a character to life in the beloved franchise. Inflatable Flamingo is described as a playful pool toy who befriends Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the Toy Story gang during their latest adventure.

For Tyla, the role carries deep personal meaning. The 24-year-old superstar grew up watching Toy Story films with her family. “Toy Story has been such a special part of my childhood, so being part of this film is a full-circle moment for me,” she shared in a statement.

The casting feels especially fitting after Tyla posted on social media in 2023: “Disney, hmu when you free,” followed by a princess emoji. While she isn’t playing a princess, landing a role in one of animation’s most successful franchises is a milestone achievement.

Tyla joins an impressive lineup of returning and new voices. Tom Hanks returns as Woody, Tim Allen reprises Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack is back as Jessie . New additions to the Toy Story universe include Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, Greta Lee as the tablet-device antagonist Lilypad, and Bad Bunny as Pizza with Sunglasses.

The Sub-Saharan African version of the film features Tyla’s exclusive cameo as Inflatable Flamingo. This region-specific casting practice mirrors other international releases, the UK version features broadcaster Siân Welby in the same role.

The Toy Story announcement comes on the heels of another major achievement. Tyla was recently included on FIFA’s official 2026 World Cup album alongside some of the biggest names in international music . She also contributed the song “Everything Goes with Blue” to the 2025 Smurfs movie soundtrack .

“What the heck!?” has become Tyla’s signature catchphrase, and fans are already joking that the Inflatable Flamingo better say it on screen. The role showcases her expanding versatility beyond music into global entertainment.

Toy Story 5 explores the theme of “toys versus technology,” following Woody, Buzz, and the gang as they navigate a world where digital devices increasingly compete with traditional toys. The film had its world premiere in Los Angeles on June 9, 2026.

South African and Sub-Saharan African audiences can catch Tyla’s Disney debut when Toy Story 5 opens in cinemas on June 19, 2026 . “It means so much to know that African viewers will hear an African voice bringing one of these beloved characters to life,” Tyla said.
