Travis Scott is back in Christopher Nolan’s world, and this time, his footprint goes deeper than ever before. The rapper has recorded an original song for “The Odyssey,” the Oscar-winning director’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, which will play over the film’s end credits. The track, titled “When I’m Home,” features additional vocals from James Blake and production by Ludwig Göransson, who won an Academy Award for his work on “Oppenheimer”. Scott’s involvement is no accident; he previously collaborated with Nolan on “Tenet,” closing out that film with “The Plan”.
But that’s not all. Scott also appears on-screen as a bard, reciting verses about the Trojan War to soldiers. It’s a small but significant role that Nolan specifically designed to bridge ancient storytelling traditions with modern culture. “I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap,” Nolan explained. The casting reflects the director’s vision of connecting ancient oral poetry with contemporary hip-hop, a bold move that brings the epic’s spirit of storytelling into the 21st century.
Scott is one part of an ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Zendaya as Athena, alongside Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. The film, which hits theaters July 17, was shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras and carries a reported budget of $250 million, making it Nolan’s most expensive project to date. Pre-sale records have already fallen in the UK, where BFI IMAX sold 28,000 tickets, more than doubling the previous record set by “Dune: Part Two”.
The deeper story here is about Nolan himself. “When I’m Home” marks his first-ever songwriting credit in a 28-year directing career, a milestone that adds lyricist to his already legendary resume. For Scott, the collaboration represents another major step beyond music and into the cinematic mainstream. The fusion of ancient poetry, IMAX spectacle, and modern rap is a gamble only Nolan would take, and one that’s already rewriting the rules of what an epic can be.
