The body of a University of Alabama student who vanished during a spring break trip to Spain has been recovered from the waters off a Barcelona beach. Jimmy Gracey, 20, was found Thursday evening near the same nightclub where he was last seen with friends three days earlier. Spanish police have indicated that the spring break tragedy was likely an accident, though the investigation remains active.

Gracey, an honors student from Elmhurst, Illinois, had traveled to Barcelona to visit friends studying abroad. On Monday night, he joined a group at Shoko, a waterfront nightclub in the city’s Port Olímpic district. Around 3 a.m. Tuesday, the group became separated in the crowded venue. Gracey never returned to the Airbnb where he was staying, a silence his family immediately recognized as deeply out of character.

His aunt described him as “a great kid, a good Catholic boy from the Midwest,” a chaplain in his fraternity who always checked in with loved ones. When days passed without contact, the family’s concern turned to desperation.

Catalan police launched an extensive search operation involving divers, boats, and drones. The focus quickly turned to the Mediterranean Sea near Somorrostro Beach, just steps from the nightclub. A witness told investigators they had seen Gracey walking toward the water after leaving Shoko.

On Thursday, police divers recovered a body from the water. By evening, authorities confirmed the remains were Gracey’s. Investigators also recovered his phone and later found his wallet floating in the sea.

A spokesperson for Catalonia’s regional police told the Associated Press that “all signs point” to Gracey’s death being accidental. Authorities have found no evidence of criminal involvement. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death, but police have stated the case does not appear to involve foul play.

The University of Alabama released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “Jimmy’s loss is deeply felt across our campus,” the university said. Theta Chi Fraternity, where Gracey served as chaplain and philanthropy chair, called him a brother who “always went out of his way for anyone who needed him.”

In a heartbreaking statement, Gracey’s family confirmed his death and asked for privacy. “Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” they said.

The spring break tragedy that claimed Jimmy Gracey’s life has left two continents mourning. From his fraternity brothers in Alabama to his childhood community outside Chicago, those who knew him remember a young man defined by faith, kindness, and devotion to family. As Spanish authorities continue their investigation and an autopsy awaits, the Gracey family has asked for prayers—and the space to grieve a life ended far too soon, in a foreign country, under circumstances that remain painfully unclear.
