Toby Stephens, the son of the late Dame Maggie Smith, has shared a heartfelt reflection on his mother’s life, revealing that the beloved actress never truly believed in the depth of admiration and love she received throughout her career. Dame Maggie, who passed away in September at 89, was globally adored for her iconic roles in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. Yet, according to Toby, she struggled to accept the widespread respect and affection people had for her.
In an emotional interview with The Telegraph, Toby, 55, spoke about the family’s reaction to the outpouring of love following her death. “It’s been incredibly moving for my family to see how universally loved and admired she was,” he said. “That was something she never really allowed herself to believe. She was just like all of us, she didn’t have that self-confidence.”
Reflecting on his mother’s final days, Toby described how difficult it had been for the family to watch her health decline but acknowledged that she had lived a full and remarkable life. “She had been ill for a while and it was very hard to see that. But she was in her 90th year, she’d had a really good innings.”
Following her passing, Toby and his brother Chris issued a statement, mourning the loss of their “extraordinary mother.” Dame Maggie’s funeral was held privately at Mortlake Crematorium, with tributes pouring in from fans and colleagues worldwide, including Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe, who fondly remembered her “fierce intellect” and “gloriously sharp tongue.”
