A truck carrying more than 12 tons of KitKat chocolate bars has been stolen somewhere between Italy and Poland, leaving Nestlé scrambling just weeks before Easter. The KitKat chocolate theft Easter shortage has prompted an active investigation across multiple European countries.

The shipment contained 413,793 units of KitKat’s new chocolate range. The truck departed from central Italy bound for Poland, with plans to distribute the bars along the route. Somewhere during transit last week, both the vehicle and its sweet cargo vanished without a trace.

“We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat,” a brand spokesperson said, playing on the iconic slogan. “But it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate.”

While the company appreciates the criminals’ taste, it warns that cargo theft is a growing problem for businesses of all sizes. Nestlé chose to publicize the incident to raise awareness of increasingly sophisticated cargo crime schemes.

The timing couldn’t be worse. Easter drives massive chocolate consumption across Europe, and Nestlé acknowledges the theft may leave empty shelves. Consumers may struggle to find their favorite chocolate treats ahead of the holiday.

The stolen bars could enter unofficial sales channels across European markets. However, Nestlé has a tracking advantage. Each bar carries a unique batch code. Anyone who scans a suspicious product and gets a match will receive instructions on how to alert the company. Authorities will then handle the evidence.

Investigations continue with local law enforcement and supply chain partners. The driver and vehicle remain unaccounted for. No injuries have been reported.
