Pixar Animation Studios has long been synonymous with cinematic brilliance, delivering iconic films like Toy Story and Cars. A Rocky Start: Major Script and Cast Changes
Initially announced at the 2011 D23 Expo, The Good Dinosaur promised a fresh take on animated storytelling. However, by 2013, cracks began to show. Original screenwriter Bob Peterson was dismissed from the project due to an inability to develop the third act. His departure marked the beginning of a tumultuous process, as Meg LeFauve was brought in to restructure the story.
Alongside narrative overhauls, the film’s cast underwent significant changes. Initially, comedic veteran John Lithgow was set to voice Arlo’s father, Poppa Henry. Adding to the chaos, Pixar faced internal cutbacks, laying off 67 employees in 2013 and shutting down its Canadian office, which led to an additional 80 job losses. This not only strained resources but also raised questions about the studio’s management of the project. With a budget ballooning to an estimated $200 million, the stakes for The Good Dinosaur were higher than ever.
Did The Good Dinosaur Harm Pixar’s Reputation?
Though the film eventually grossed $332 million worldwide, it fell short of expectations, especially when compared to Pixar’s other box-office hits. Critics, however, praised its stunning animation and heartfelt story. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times lauded it for its breathtaking landscapes and unconventional narrative, calling it “antic and unexpected.”
Despite its visual and emotional strengths, the film highlighted cracks in Pixar’s usually seamless production process. For some fans, the numerous delays and creative missteps tarnished the studio’s reputation for delivering perfection. Others argued that the premature announcement of the project at D23 contributed to its struggles, as the film was far from ready to meet the public eye.
