Two-time Grammy winner Tems has expressed her gratitude to veteran singer Seyi Sodimu for allowing her to sample his 1997 hit, ‘Love Me Jeje’, in her award-winning track of the same title.
Tems, 29, won Best African Music Performance at the 67th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles but faced criticism for not mentioning Sodimu in her acceptance speech. In response to the backlash, she took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to give him his flowers, calling the original song a “timeless classic.”
“I just want to thank the wonderful @seyimusic for his role in the support and clearing of his OG song ‘Love Me Jeje.’ It’s brought the original song back to life for me, and I’m glad that it’s getting its flowers today. A timeless classic. I appreciate you so much. Thank you for your love and support,” she wrote.
Tems’ Grammy-winning song competed against ‘Tomorrow’ by Yemi Alade, ‘MMS’ by Asake featuring Wizkid, ‘Sensational’ by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, and ‘Higher’ by Burna Boy.
Beyond this win, she also secured nominations for Best Global Music Album with her debut Born in the Wild and Best R&B Song with ‘Burning.’
With this latest achievement, Tems continues to solidify her global influence, proving that her artistry is not just about creating hits but also about redefining African music on the world stage.
