Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has issued a firm response following striker Viktor Gyökeres’ failure to report for pre-season, insisting that the club will not be pressured into selling their star forward below value.
Speaking to the media amid ongoing transfer speculation, Varandas made it clear that Sporting will stand their ground, regardless of interest from top European clubs.
“If they don’t want to pay Viktor’s fair market value, we’re very comfortable with that for the next three years.”
Gyökeres, who enjoyed a sensational debut season in Portugal with over 40 goal contributions, is reportedly on the radar of clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Atletico Madrid. However, Sporting have maintained a firm stance on his €100 million release clause, with Varandas now publicly criticizing what he perceives as disruptive tactics from suitors.
“This strategy is also making it more complicated for the player to leave. Nobody is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are.”
The Swedish international’s absence from the club’s preseason activities has sparked speculation of a potential transfer standoff. But Varandas dismissed the noise, saying the club remains “calm” and focused on protecting its interests.
“We’re calm. Everything will be resolved with the market closing, a hefty fine and an apology to the group.”

What This Means:
- Sporting are not budging on Gyökeres’ valuation.
- The player risks disciplinary action, including fines, if he continues to skip club duties.
- Clubs unwilling to meet the full release clause may find themselves out of the race.
Gyökeres signed a long-term contract until 2028 when he joined from Coventry City last summer. With three years remaining, Sporting holds all the leverage — and Varandas is making sure the football world knows it.
