South African football is in mourning. Jayden Adams, the midfielder who helped Bafana Bafana make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has died at just 25 years old. Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture, confirmed the devastating news, calling Adams “one of its brightest young talents”. Police have opened an investigation after his body was found at a house in Schotschekloof, Cape Town, though the cause of death has not yet been confirmed. The minister urged the public to refrain from speculation.
Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches at the World Cup, playing a vital role in the team’s historic run. He started against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming off the bench in the 1-0 win over South Korea that secured Bafana Bafana’s first-ever knockout stage berth. He was an unused substitute in the round-of-32 loss to Canada. His performance carried extra weight, he played against Czechia just a day after his grandmother passed away.
The Cape Town native rose through Stellenbosch FC’s academy, becoming the club’s first youth graduate to sign a professional contract in 2020. He made 139 appearances for the club before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he won the Premiership and CAF Champions League titles. On the international stage, he debuted in 2022, earned 13 caps, and helped South Africa secure a bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
The South African Football Players Union expressed its devastation, saying, “Death has cruelly stolen one of our own. We will forever remember Jayden Adams for his humility, his extraordinary talent and the joy he brought to the beautiful game”. FIFA president Gianni Infantino also extended condolences, joining the global football community in mourning a young life taken far too soon.
