Sonic the Hedgehog is racing ahead once again! Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has outpaced Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King to claim the top spot at the box office, kicking off the holiday season with a bang.
Debuting with a stellar $62 million (£49.3 million) in ticket sales, Sonic 3 is already proving to be a fan-favorite, boasting an 86% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive “A” CinemaScore from audiences. As families flock to cinemas during this festive period, the beloved blue blur is set to dominate screens and potentially surpass the $700 million (£556.6 million) global total of its two predecessors.
Meanwhile, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, despite its star-studded voice cast including Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and Mads Mikkelsen, had a less-than-roaring debut. The highly anticipated Lion King prequel opened to $35 million (£27.8 million) in domestic ticket sales—far below expectations, especially considering its $200 million (£159 million) production cost.
While Mufasa launched in more theaters (4,100 locations versus Sonic 3’s 3,761), the hedgehog nearly doubled its opening weekend earnings, proving once again that video game adaptations are becoming box office powerhouses. International sales of $87.2 million (£69.3 million) may help Disney recoup some of the losses, but the film’s lukewarm opening is a stark contrast to 2019’s The Lion King, which debuted with $191 million (£151.9 million).
Sonic 3, directed by Jeff Fowler, reunites fans with Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Jim Carrey in his dual roles as Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather. Its blend of humor, action, and nostalgia is hitting all the right notes with audiences, making it a family favorite during the busiest moviegoing season of the year.
Disney, however, isn’t out of the race yet. With animated blockbusters like Inside Out 2 and Moana 2, the studio has had a stellar year, amassing over $5 billion (£3.97 billion) in global ticket sales. Moana 2alone has pulled in $790.2 million (£628 million) worldwide, solidifying its place as one of 2024’s biggest hits.
Family-friendly films like Sonic 3, Moana 2, and Universal’s Wicked have been instrumental in Hollywood’s post-pandemic recovery. According to Comscore, animated movies now account for 26% of this year’s box office revenue, proving the enduring appeal of stories that bring families together.
As the Christmas movie season heats up, all eyes are on Sonic 3 to continue its winning streak—and perhaps even set the stage for its already-confirmed fourth installment. One thing is clear: the blue blur is here to stay, and the box office is loving the ride.
