Electronic music pioneer Soft Cell Dave Ball passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, October 22nd, at the age of 66. Ball was best known as the instrumental half of the influential synth-pop duo Soft Cell, alongside vocalist Marc Almond. His death was confirmed by the band, with Almond issuing a heartfelt tribute calling his musical partner of almost 50 years a “wonderfully brilliant musical genius.”

Ball’s legacy extends far beyond Soft Cell’s ubiquitous hits like “Tainted Love” and “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye.” In the late 80s, he co-founded The Grid, a successful acid house act that pioneered the genre with club hits, most notably “Swamp Thing.” This versatility cemented his status as a key figure in British electronic music.

Marc Almond noted that Ball was in a “great place emotionally” and was happy after having just completed the final mixes for Soft Cell’s sixth and now final studio album, Danceteria. The album is currently scheduled for release in the spring of 2026. The new record serves as a posthumous testament to Ball’s enduring skill and passion for music.

The final public appearance of the duo took place just weeks ago when Soft Cell headlined the Rewind Festival, playing for over 20,000 fans. As the world mourns the loss of this giant of the synth-pop and acid house scenes, the powerful music created by Soft Cell Dave Ball passed to history will live on.
