The UK government has confirmed plans to restrict social media access for anyone under the age of 16. The social media ban under 16 applies to major platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube, and X, marking one of the most aggressive child online safety policies in the Western world.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer social media restrictions were announced in a video message. “Social media is making children unhappy,” Starmer said. The policy targets both mental health deterioration and the cycle of addiction that displaces sleep, play, and family time.

The social media ban under 16 follows growing evidence linking childhood screen dependency to rising anxiety and depression rates. Starmer cited thousands of parent testimonies describing children as “trapped in a cycle of endless scrolling.”

“Kids have to find their feet in a world that changes so quickly, where technology intrudes into every area of their lives,” the Prime Minister warned. The Keir Starmer social media restrictions specifically target harms including online bullying, predatory behavior, and algorithm-driven content that keeps minors glued to screens for hours.

Starmer acknowledged the policy will face criticism, particularly from tech companies and civil liberties advocates. However, he insisted the move is evidence-based. “We haven’t rushed into it. We’ve looked carefully at the evidence,” he said.

Addressing potential pushback directly, Starmer added: “Some people may object, we will take them on, and we will win.” The social media ban under 16 is expected to face legal challenges regarding enforcement mechanisms and privacy implications.

Social media companies will likely need to implement age-verification technology similar to systems used for gambling and alcohol sales online. The government has not yet announced a specific implementation timeline. But Starmer’s closing message was unambiguous: “Our children deserve a happy, safe childhood.”
