Scarlett Johansson’s tenure as Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) made her one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors, thanks to her decade-long run in the franchise. However, her post-MCU journey took an unexpected turn when she sued Disney over a contract dispute, igniting one of the most talked-about legal battles in the industry.
The $56 Million MCU Payday & Black Widow’s Delayed Solo Film
Despite playing a pivotal role in the Avengers saga, Johansson only received her long-overdue standalone film after her character’s on-screen demise. Black Widow, originally set for a May 2020 release, was repeatedly delayed due to the pandemic. When it finally hit theaters in July 2021, Disney made the controversial decision to release it simultaneously on Disney+ Premier Access, undercutting its theatrical exclusivity.
This decision directly impacted Johansson’s earnings, as her contract included a box office-based payout. With Disney bypassing traditional ticket sales, Johansson filed a lawsuit, arguing that the move significantly reduced her potential earnings.

Although Johansson hasn’t appeared in any Disney productions post-lawsuit, she was initially set to star in and produce Tower of Terror, a movie based on the popular Disney theme park ride. Despite a 2021 announcement and a script update in late 2023, there has been little movement on the project, leaving its fate uncertain.
