The desert was full of surprises this weekend, but not all of them were part of the script. Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter found herself at the center of a viral conversation following a brief exchange with a fan during her Friday night headlining performance. While the set, titled “Sabrinawood,” was a cinematic triumph, a spontaneous interaction during a quiet piano moment led to what fans are calling Sabrina Carpenter’s Coachella Gaffe.
While seated at her piano, Carpenter paused after hearing a high-pitched vocal cheer from the audience. Unable to identify the sound through her in-ear monitors, she addressed the crowd directly. “I think I heard someone yodel. Is that what you’re doing? I don’t like it,” she quipped with her signature sarcasm. When the fan responded that it was their culture, Carpenter followed up by asking, “That’s your culture, is yodeling? Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird.”
The sound in question was actually a zaghrouta (plural zaghareet), a traditional Arabic ululation used to express joy and celebration at weddings and festivals. Because the vocal style involves rapid trilling and pitch shifts, it is often unfamiliar to those outside of Middle Eastern and North African cultures. Clips of the exchange immediately flooded social media, with many viewers criticizing the “weird” comment as dismissive of a sacred cultural expression.
Taking to social media the following day, Carpenter was quick to clarify the situation and offer a sincere apology. She explained that she could not see the fan and was unable to hear the clarification clearly over the festival noise. “My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm, and not ill-intended. Could have handled it better,” she wrote. “Now I know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out.”
Despite the brief controversy, the rest of the performance was hailed as a masterpiece of pop theater. Featuring cameos from Will Ferrell as a comedic electrician and voiceovers from Susan Sarandon, the set solidified Carpenter’s status as a top-tier headliner. As the festival heads into its second weekend, the “Espresso” singer has turned a moment of cultural confusion into a learning opportunity, ensuring that her Coachella legacy remains defined by her music and growth.
