Afrobeats sensation Ruger has revealed that his church choir background played a crucial role in shaping his vocal abilities.
Speaking in a recent episode of Apple Music’s Africa Now, the Bounce hitmaker shared how his early exposure to gospel music refined his singing skills.
“Only people who have experienced me perform live have had the opportunity to enjoy my vocals. Even in my music, I don’t necessarily show it off.”
Live Performances Showcase His True Vocal Power
Ruger emphasized that while his studio recordings may not always highlight his vocal prowess, those who watch him perform live get to witness the full range of his singing ability.
“My favorite time being Ruger is when I’m performing on stage because I get to do whatever I like with my songs. I started from the choir. I know how to sing, especially when it is a song that resonates deeply with me.”
His statement adds him to the growing list of Nigerian artists—such as Wizkid, Simi, and Johnny Drille—who honed their craft in the church before making it big in the mainstream music industry.
With Ruger’s evolution as an artist, fans can expect even more vocal versatility in his future projects.
