Rihanna is stepping into a new role—and this time, it’s bright blue and full of sass.
The music icon and fashion mogul lends her voice to Smurfette in the new animated musical-comedy Smurfs (2025), and she says the beloved character has always held a special place in her heart.
“I’ve always identified with Smurfette, right back to when I was four or five years old,”Rihanna told HELLO! magazine. “So when this opportunity came up, I just couldn’t believe it. It’s a dream come true.”
“She’s Tough, Fearless and Still a Girl’s Girl”
The 37-year-old singer explained that Smurfette’s personality mirrors her own: strong-willed, feminine, and resilient.
“She’s not afraid of anything or anyone. She’s a leader, determined, and she never gives up. I really feel like I identify with her a lot.”
Smurfette’s role as a beautician and aesthetician also resonated with the Fenty Beauty boss, who added, “It felt like we have a lot in common.”
“Little Girls Are Going to Believe They Can Be Her”
For Rihanna, Smurfette is more than just a cartoon—she’s a symbol of strength, independence, and charm.
“She’s real and accessible, and you’re charmed by her. Little girls are going to believe they can be her—or be friends with her.”
She hopes Smurfette becomes an empowering figure for young girls watching the film.
Rihanna Gets Personal About Acting and Family
Despite her growing list of film credits—including her voice role as Tip in Home—Rihanna admits she still feels more at ease in the studio than on a film set.
“I feel much more confident as a musician than I do with acting. It’s intimidating to be among seasoned actors. But I think as long as I work at it, I can keep doing film.”
And her biggest cheerleaders? Her sons, RZA (3) and Riot (23 months), whom she shares with rapper A$AP Rocky.
“They’re excited about it. To be there with them to see Smurfette on screen with my voice is a huge moment. It’s fun to share this with them.”
A Message About Teamwork and Dreams
The film follows the Smurfs as they rescue Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) from evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel, and discover the power of destiny and friendship along the way.
Rihanna, who also contributed original music to the soundtrack, hopes the movie delivers more than laughs and adventure.
“I hope they have fun watching it and come away with the positive message that to achieve anything in life, it takes a team. We all need a strong team around us. I know I do.”
With a powerful voice, both on-screen and off, Rihanna continues to inspire—this time, in Smurf-blue.
