Afrobeats sensation Rema has responded to critics who mistake his self-confidence for arrogance, making it clear that believing in himself is not a crime.
The “Calm Down” hitmaker recently stirred debate after boldly declaring himself one of Afrobeats’ greatest artists. While some praised his confidence, others saw it as cockiness. Addressing the controversy in a new Rolling Stone interview, Rema explained that his strong belief in his talent comes from years of hard work, dedication, and excellence in the music industry.
“What’s Wrong with Saying I’m the Best?” – Rema
Rema questioned why acknowledging his own success seems to bother people. He emphasized that confidence is a powerful trait, not a flaw.
“It is not cocky. What stops you from saying you’re the best? You can say it and stand your ground. It is even humble to say four,” he stated.
Drawing inspiration from Kendrick Lamar’s recent diss track, Rema clarified that, unlike Kendrick’s “It’s just big me” statement—which some interpreted as dismissing others—he was not trying to undermine anyone. Instead, his goal is to promote unity and growth within the Afrobeats industry.
“I didn’t pull down the two, I didn’t pull down the three. I just see myself as one of the greats, and it’s a problem? I’m not saying ‘oh fk everybody.’ I really vouch for the unity of Afrobeats.”**
Fans React: Confidence or Cockiness?
Rema’s response has once again divided fans. Some applaud his mindset, seeing it as a motivation for younger artists, while others feel humility should come first.
One thing is certain—Rema is not backing down. And with his global success, record-breaking streams, and impact on Afrobeats, maybe he has every right to say he’s one of the greats.
What do you think? Is Rema just confident, or is he crossing the line?
