Prince Harry is opening up about a difficult chapter. During a MasterClass he gave on grief, the Duke of Sussex admitted he felt depressed after moving to Canada with Meghan Markle and their son, Prince Archie, in 2019. He described it as an adrenaline crash after leaving a stressful environment.

The Prince Harry depression admission was candid. “It was as if I needed stress in order to get the adrenaline to make my brain function because I became useless around the house,” Harry said. “I actually slipped into depression for about two weeks and I felt like I couldn’t function without adrenaline.” He said the move was meant to “get some space away from everything just to be able to think,” and that the time away gave them clarity about stepping back from royal duties.

Harry and Meghan spent the end of 2019 in Canada before announcing in early 2020 that they would step back as senior royals. They later relocated to Montecito, California, where they lived for six years before returning to the U.K. in August 2026. Their move back got off to a rocky start when they had to pull their children out of school due to security concerns. Harry has spoken openly about his mental health in recent years, including in his memoir Spare and his Netflix documentary series.
