The cold war between Pete Davidson and Kanye West just caught fire again. Davidson took the stage Sunday night at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles for Kevin Hart’s roast and delivered a punchline aimed directly at his former adversary. “I was in a beef with Kanye, so I’ve taken shots from better gay Nazis,” Davidson said. The crowd reacted with a mix of gasps and laughter. The joke revived a feud that began in 2022 when Davidson briefly dated West’s ex-wife, Kim Kardashian.
The original conflict was anything but subtle. West publicly mocked Davidson, dubbing him “Skete” and releasing music videos that depicted violence against the comedian. For months, the pair traded barbs online. Davidson largely stayed quiet after the relationship with Kardashian ended. Sunday night marked his first major public response in years.
Davidson’s joke referenced West’s well-documented embrace of Hitler and Nazi ideology, which began in 2022. The rapper made repeated antisemitic statements before eventually apologizing. He took out a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal expressing remorse. Still, the apology did little to repair his reputation in Hollywood. Davidson used that open wound as a stage prop.
The “gay” portion of the joke has confused some observers. West is currently married to Bianca Censori, with whom he frequently appears publicly. The couple maintains a high-profile and explicitly heterosexual image. Whether Davidson was leaning into absurdist comedy or referencing something else remains unclear.
The ball is now in West’s court. Historically, the rapper does not ignore public insults, especially from Davidson. Fans are already watching social media for a response in the form of a diss track, an Instagram rant, or something more unpredictable. One thing is certain: the roast is over, but the war isn’t.
