Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has made it clear—no matter how dominant Liverpool is this season, they won’t break City’s legendary 100-point Premier League record.
Currently leading the league with 57 points from 24 games, Liverpool holds a seven-point gap over Arsenal and is inching closer to their 20th league title. But even as City trails by 16 points, Guardiola remains proud of the historic milestones his team has set.
Guardiola: “We Set the Standards”
Addressing critics following City’s 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League play-off round, Guardiola reminded everyone of the benchmark his team established.
“We’ve set the standards in England. Achieving 100 points is monumental in modern football, especially with highly competitive teams like Bournemouth, Fulham, and Wolves constantly improving,” he said.
City Struggling, But the Premier League Has Evolved
While acknowledging City’s current struggles, Guardiola pointed to injuries, player fatigue, and increased competition as factors behind their dip in form.
“The league has changed. Teams are better prepared than ever before. This season has been a lesson in resilience and consistency,” he added.
Despite this, Guardiola remains firm—City’s 100-point milestone from 2017-18 remains unmatched, and Liverpool isn’t likely to change that.
City Must Adapt to New Challenges
Unlike in previous seasons, City has struggled to capitalize on their possession-based play. Guardiola admitted:
“We’ve always been comfortable with possession, but now we’re also struggling when we have the ball. We need to adapt, overcome, and move forward together.”
While City may not be at their usual best, Guardiola believes their legacy remains untouchable—for now.
