After more than 15 years of marriage and three decades of knowing each other, Penélope Cruz admits she’s still discovering new things about her husband, Javier Bardem.
The 52-year-old actress offered a rare glimpse into one of Hollywood’s most private relationships while promoting her new comedy, The Invite, directed by Olivia Wilde. The film, which centers on two couples at a dinner party, explores relationship dynamics that Cruz finds universally relatable because even she’s still figuring things out.
Cruz and Bardem first crossed paths in 1992 while filming the Spanish dark comedy Jamón Jamón. She was just 16; he was 23. The chemistry was undeniable, but nothing happened. “She was underage,” Bardem later explained.
It took 16 more years for sparks to finally fly. The pair reunited on the set of Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008. Even then, neither made a move. “I don’t know if we were shy or trying to be too professional,” Bardem recalled. By the last day of filming, still nothing. His solution? “I thought, ‘We better get drunk!'” A wrap party changed everything. “The rest is history. Thank God!”
Cruz believes that people, and relationships, are always evolving. “I feel like I’m still learning [in my relationship], you know? And I am with somebody that I’ve known for 33 years,” she shared. “I really know that person, but it’s like, is there a day where you really get to know yourself? No. So the same with your partner”.
Bardem says their foundation was built before fame changed everything. “We met each other and knew each other before all of the noise, before success and before anybody saw us with different eyes,” he reflected in a 2024 interview. “You see me, I see you. That’s important”.
The couple, notoriously private, married in an intimate Bahamas ceremony in July 2010. They share two children: son Leo, born January 2011, and daughter Luna, born July 2013.
Fifteen years in, Cruz and Bardem prove that lasting love doesn’t mean knowing everything. It means staying curious, and showing up to learn more.
