Legendary Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, fondly called Mama G, has opened up on why she took a step back from her music career despite the massive popularity of her hit song National Moi-Moi.
In a recent interview, the veteran actress disclosed that criticism from religious leaders, particularly from the church community, played a significant role in her decision to abandon music and focus solely on acting.
“I received a lot of criticism, especially from the church,” Ozokwor revealed. “They felt the song did not align with the image they expected of me, and that really made me rethink my musical career.”
Released in 2007, National Moi-Moi was a sensation, loved for its catchy beat and humorous lyrics. However, religious figures criticized it for being “inappropriate” for someone of Mama G’s stature, considering her influence in society.
Why Mama G Chose Acting Over Music
The Nollywood icon, who had once tried to balance acting and music, admitted that the backlash forced her to make a tough choice.
“I didn’t want unnecessary distractions. Acting was my first love, so I decided to focus fully on it,” she added.
Since then, Mama G has gone on to become one of Nollywood’s most respected and decorated actresses, giving fans decades of unforgettable performances. Still, National Moi-Moi holds a special place in the hearts of many, remaining a nostalgic tune for lovers of classic Nigerian pop culture.
