Nick Dumont, known professionally as Emma Dumont, has spoken out about their journey of self-discovery after publicly coming out as trans masculine nonbinary. The Oppenheimer actor, who now uses they/them pronouns, shared their heartfelt experience in a candid statement to Out.
“Coming out to myself as trans has been one of the longest challenges I’ve faced in life. It has also been the most rewarding by a mile,” Dumont expressed, reflecting on the deeply personal journey.
While Dumont plans to continue using their birth name for work, they’ve embraced “Nick” in their personal life. They revealed that their understanding of their gender identity was a gradual process shaped by years of introspection and challenges, including growing up in an environment where they didn’t feel safe being their true self.
At 19, Dumont experienced a pivotal moment of gender euphoria while playing a transgender character in a TV pilot. “I looked at myself in basketball shorts, bandage wrapped around my chest, and thought, ‘Damn, I look good!’” they recalled.
A decade later, Dumont found a supportive community and fully embraced their identity as nonbinary. “I’m trans. I love being trans. We’re here. We’ve always been here,” they declared with pride.
Grateful for access to resources like the LA LGBT Center, Dumont acknowledged the privilege of receiving medical care without fear—something many in the trans community still struggle to access. They also paid tribute to the courageous queer trailblazers who paved the way for a more accepting world.
Though they hadn’t initially planned to come out publicly so soon, Dumont said their decision stemmed from pride and authenticity. “I made a promise to myself that if someone asked, I would share. Someone did ask, and I shared… because I’m proud.”
