Olivia Rodrigo has a confession about a condition she’s carried with her since childhood and during a recent interview promoting her latest album, the Grammy-winning singer revealed that she is roughly 60% deaf in her left ear. She shared the news with her trademark self-deprecating humor, telling KISS FM UK that if someone tries to share a secret from her left side, she simply won’t catch it.
The 23-year-old pop star opened up about the condition while discussing her new album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. One of the album’s tracks is called “What’s Wrong With Me?”, a question the radio hosts playfully turned back on her during the interview. Rodrigo laughed and said, “There’s quite a lot that’s wrong with me,” before explaining the partial hearing loss and joking that any secrets should be whispered directly into her right ear.
This isn’t the first time Rodrigo has mentioned her hearing challenges. She previously told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023 that she first learned about her partial deafness during a routine hearing test in kindergarten. School staff told her, “Oh, you’re a little hard of hearing,” a moment she’s described as “interesting” and unusual for a musician.
The “Driver’s License” singer has maintained a lighthearted perspective on her hearing loss. She’s joked with her friend, photographer Petra Collins, that their physical quirks have shaped their careers. “I make music because I have bad hearing and she takes photos because she has bad vision,” Rodrigo quipped.
Despite the condition, Rodrigo continues to dominate the music industry and is preparing for her upcoming “Unraveled Tour,” which kicks off in September. She proves that a disability doesn’t have to stop someone from making art, just maybe keep the secrets on her right side
