The US Consulate General in Lagos recently hosted a vibrant fireside chat featuring Nigerian-born Hollywood actor Bayo Akinfemi, known for his standout role on the Emmy-nominated CBS sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola. The event brought together over 100 leaders and emerging talents from Nigeria’s creative industries, including film, music, arts, and culture.
Moderated by Arise TV Senior Host Steve Ayorinde, the discussion delved into Akinfemi’s inspiring journey from Nigeria to Hollywood and his multifaceted role on Bob Hearts Abishola as both an actor and the show’s dialect coach and Nigerian culture consultant.
Akinfemi shared insights on the growing global recognition of Nigerian stories, urging creatives to craft narratives with international appeal. “The world is paying attention to Nigerian stories, music, and culture,” he emphasized. “Focusing solely on local audiences makes it harder for your work to resonate globally.”
Drawing from his extensive Hollywood experience, with appearances in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Criminal Minds, NCIS: LA, and Survivor’s Remorse, Akinfemi encouraged Nigerian creatives to stay resilient, innovative, and persistent in their craft.
Beyond acting, Akinfemi is a two-time Best Actor GEMINI Awards nominee and an assistant professor of theatre practice in acting at the prestigious University of Southern California School for Cinematic and Dramatic Arts. As a director, actor, and educator, he continues to inspire a new generation of storytellers to share compelling Nigerian narratives with the world.
The event, organized by the US Consulate, underscored the importance of fostering global opportunities for Nigerian creatives while celebrating the undeniable impact of Nigerian talent on the world stage.
