“You can now subscribe to my X account,” she wrote. “It’s for ppl who wanna have fun, think deeper, grow, learn, laugh, cry, cuss ppl out, look cute sometimes, be yourself at all times… elevate, levitate, meditate”. Subscribers get exclusive posts, private Spaces, and a special badge that makes their replies stand out. She’s already hosted her first subscriber-only trivia session.
The move has divided social media. Critics were quick to question why a Grammy-winning rapper with a net worth once estimated in the hundreds of millions is asking fans for pocket change. “What happened to billionaire Barbie?” one person wrote. Another commented, “If you’re broke, why don’t you just say that” Others directly linked the subscription to her ongoing legal disputes, with one user writing, “C’mon barbz subscribe to her she needa pay dem lawsuits she lost”.
The timing of Minaj’s subscription launch has fueled speculation, as she faces a lawsuit from a concert production company over an alleged $275,000 debt. 24/7 Productions claims it fronted production costs for her 2023 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball performances and the Pink Friday 2 album rollout, but her team has failed to pay for nearly two years. Her legal team argues she shouldn’t have been named personally in the suit, claiming the debt belongs to her corporate entity, Pink Friday Productions LLC. A judge is set to hear oral arguments on her motion to dismiss.
Despite the backlash, early numbers show over 2,300 fans have already subscribed, generating more than $23,000 in monthly recurring revenue. For the Barbz willing to pay, the subscription remains a way to get closer to the Queen of Rap, legal battles and all.
