Nick Cannon is channeling his grief into purpose. The 45-year-old father of 12 took to social media on June 23 to honor what would have been his son Zen Scott Cannon’s fifth birthday, sharing an emotional tribute that reflects his ongoing commitment to turning pain into purpose. “6/23 will forever be a day of light! Turning our pain to purpose!” Cannon wrote, alongside a photo collage of baby Zen. He added, “We celebrate the life of our Young King Zen Scott Cannon! We honor our beautiful son and the precious moments we got to share in the physical and the constant energy we share in the Spirit daily.”

Zen was born on June 23, 2021. He passed away at just five months old on December 5, 2021, after being diagnosed with high-grade glioma, an aggressive and rare form of brain cancer.

Cannon and Zen’s mother, model Alyssa Scott, were by their son’s side throughout his brief battle. The diagnosis came as a shock after what was initially thought to be a routine checkup. But scans revealed a malignant tumor in his brain. Doctors performed surgery and placed a shunt to relieve fluid buildup, but the cancer progressed aggressively.

Since Zen’s passing, Cannon and Scott have worked together to keep his memory alive. They co-founded the Zen’s Light Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting families navigating pediatric healthcare challenges and advancing pediatric cancer research.

Cannon’s tribute reflects a philosophy he has embraced since Zen’s death: transforming profound loss into meaningful action. Zen’s Light has become a cornerstone of that mission, hosting annual lighting ceremonies and gala events to raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer care. He called June 23 a “tough one” but said the goal is always to try to “turn pain into purpose.”

Zen is one of Cannon’s 12 children. Since losing him, Cannon and Scott have welcomed another child together, a daughter named Halo Marie. His birthday tribute highlights the daily presence he feels from Zen in spirit and energy. The support on social media reflected the compassion Cannon’s family has received since the loss.
