Nia Long is opening up about stepping into the shoes of the Jackson family matriarch. The acclaimed actress told Pop Base that she portrayed Katherine Jackson with a “quiet, deliberate strength” in the upcoming ‘MICHAEL’ biopic. The Nia Long Katherine Jackson MICHAEL biopic performance is already generating awards season buzz, even before the film’s wide release.

During the interview hosted by Amber Grimes, Long described the weight of playing a woman who held one of the most famous families in music together through unimaginable pressure. The quiet, deliberate strength performance, as Long called it, required her to strip away any theatricality and find the power in stillness.

“She doesn’t scream to be heard,” Long explained. “Katherine’s power was in her presence. In her refusal to break.” The biopic, directed by Antoine Fuqua, chronicles Michael Jackson’s rise from Gary, Indiana, to global superstardom, with Katherine serving as an emotional anchor throughout the family’s turbulent journey.

Long, known for roles in Friday, Love Jones, and The Best Man, underwent extensive preparation for the part. She studied archival footage of Katherine Jackson, spoke with people who knew her intimately, and worked with a dialect coach to capture the matriarch’s soft-spoken yet unwavering cadence.

The ‘MICHAEL’ biopic stars Jaafar Jackson as his uncle, with Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Octavia Spencer as a family confidante. The film is currently in theaters after a widely publicized rollout that included a massive ice pyramid reveal in Toronto.

Long hopes audiences walk away understanding Katherine not just as Michael’s mother, but as the architect of a family’s survival. “She was the calm in every storm,” Long said. “That’s what I wanted to show.”
