Executive produced by Matt and Ross Duffer, ‘The Boroughs’ was often described as “Stranger Things with a senior cast,” swapping out teenagers for retirees in a supernatural mystery. The series followed a group of residents in a picturesque New Mexico retirement community who band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing their time.
The show boasted an ensemble of veteran actors, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. Molina played Sam Cooper, a recent widower and reluctant hero who discovers a terrifying entity haunting his neighborhood.
Despite the star power and critical acclaim, the series scored an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, viewership numbers told a different story. The show opened with 5.6 million views in its debut weekend, climbing to 9.5 million in its first full week before dropping sharply to 3.7 million the following week. This decline signaled limited long-term audience growth.
Industry sources point to cost as a decisive factor in Netflix’s decision . The elaborate special effects required for the series, combined with salaries for its all-star cast, made it an expensive production . A writers’ room for Season 2 had already been opened, and one proposal under consideration involved filming Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back . However, those plans were scrapped when viewership failed to meet expectations.
The cancellation leaves Netflix with only one Duffer Brothers-related series, the animated ‘Stranger Things: Tales from ’85’, roughly six weeks after the siblings departed the streamer for a major film and television deal with Paramount.
