A wave of shock and grief has hit the South Florida political community following the tragic death of Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen. On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the 38-year-old trailblazing politician was found dead in her home during a police wellness check. Authorities have since taken her husband, Stephen Bowen, into custody, investigating the case as a Florida politician domestic violence incident 2026.
Nancy Metayer Bowen was a historic figure in Broward County. In 2020, she became the first Black woman and the first Haitian American woman to be elected as a Coral Springs commissioner. Known for her tireless advocacy for environmental justice and community empowerment, she was re-elected in 2024 and was currently serving her second term as vice mayor. Beyond local government, Bowen served as the vice chair of the Florida Democratic Party and was previously the Caribbean Vote Director for the 2024 Harris campaign.
The timing of the tragedy is particularly devastating for her supporters. Florida Representative Jared Moskowitz revealed that Bowen was preparing to announce a run for Congress. Reports from the Miami Herald indicate the announcement was scheduled for Thursday, April 2. Bowen was expected to challenge incumbent Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick in the Democratic primary. Cherfilus-McCormick has been under heavy fire since her November 2025 indictment for allegedly laundering $5 million in federal disaster relief funds to support her previous campaigns.
Coral Springs police arrived at the Bowen residence just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday for a wellness check. Upon discovering the body, they immediately launched an investigation into what they described as an act of domestic violence. Stephen Bowen, 40, was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with premeditated murder and tampering with evidence.
Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried released a statement expressing total devastation:
“Nancy was a kind and caring person, and a true leader in her community. This is an immense loss for all of us, and the world is darker without her.”
Bowen is survived by her parents and siblings. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
