Moana 2, Disney’s highly anticipated animated sequel, is enjoying a spectacular run at the box office. After premiering on November 27, 2024, the film has earned over $882.5 million globally in its first five weekends, with projections indicating it will soon cross the $1 billion mark.

With a production budget of $150 million, Moana 2 has already secured profitability and is well on its way to joining an exclusive group of films to surpass $1 billion in global earnings. This milestone would make it the fourth Disney Animation Studios film to reach that achievement, alongside ZootopiaFrozen, and Frozen II.

In the five-day holiday period from December 25 to December 29, 2024, Moana 2 earned $28.3 million domestically, bringing its North American total to $395 million. Although Universal’s Wicked slightly edged it out in domestic earnings with $31.7 million, Moana 2 is still dominating globally with a total of $882.5 million compared to Wicked’s $634 million.

As it approaches the $1 billion mark, Moana 2 is poised to become one of the biggest animated hits in recent years, cementing its place among Disney’s top earners.

Other films also making waves include Mufasa: The Lion King, which is in a neck-and-neck battle with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for the top spot at the North American box office. Additionally, films like Nosferatu and A Complete Unknown have exceeded expectations, contributing to a robust end to 2024 for the movie industry.

Fans of Moana 2 can continue to enjoy the film in theaters, with streaming on Disney+ expected after its theatrical run.
